How can I help my child succeed?

The positive impact of caregiver involvement and experiential learning has shown to produce higher student achievement.

Here are five things you can do to help your child succeed:

  • Complete the recommended learning activities with your child. The Caregiver Portal recommends thousands of quick, easy learning activities catered to your child’s areas of improvement.
  • Attend and engage on Assessment Day and at any other extracurricular activities. Being present on Assessment Day will give the most accurate assessment results for your child. Attending and engaging in extracurricular activities encourages learning and helps bridge education from the classroom to home environment.
  • Ask questions. If something concerns you about your child’s learning or behaviour, ask their teacher or principal for their advice. Often they can give you tips and insights on your child’s areas of improvement and advice on how you can help.
  • Speak with your child. Talking and listening play a huge role in your child’s school success. Through listening and responding to parents and family members talk, young children pick up the language skills they need to succeed. These language skills will also translate to improved reading and ability to follow instruction.
  • Encourage your child to read. This one seems like a no-brainer but is often overlooked. Reading builds oral language skills and vice-versa, which makes it important in a child’s development. Whether it’s on a tablet or on good old fashioned paper, try to read with your child every day.
